Missed Opportunities

Luke 13:34-35 – “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not! Behold, your house is left unto you desolate: and verily I say unto you, Ye shall not see me, until the time come when ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

This portion of scripture is prophetic. Jesus is prophesying against them because they would not accept Him. But He speaks to them in these verses of missed opportunities. Times when things could have been different, they could be closer to Jesus, but they would not.

The Bible teaches us that we may never see tomorrow. We are not promised any future on Earth except when He comes again and we reign with Him (Proverbs 27:1 – Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.”)

So often our fast paced lives carry us right past opportunities to make a difference in our own lives or someone else’s. Missed opportunities can never fully be recovered.

We must:

  1. Open our eyes, ears, and hearts to the opportunities. The people of Jerusalem saw and heard Jesus, but did not open their hearts to Him. We must be willing to find the opportunities.
  2. Act now. Don’t wait. An opportunity may never come again.

Say “I love you,” send a card, give a hug, take advantage of every moment every day. There are people we will only pass by once in this life and we never know just what infraction may change or produce in their lives or ours.
