The Danger of Indifference

Numbers 32: 5-7 – “‘Wherefore,’ said they, ‘if we have found grace in any sight, let this land be given unto thy servants for a possession, and bring us not over Jordan.’ And Moses said ‘unto the children of Gad and to the children of Rueben, shall your brethren go to war, and shall ye sit here? And wherefore discourage ye the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which the Lord hath given them?’”

God gave a promise to His people. To deliver them into a land that flowed with milk and honey. A land full of ripe and mature orchards, olive yards and vineyards, cities built and houses furnished. All they had to do was go in and possess the land. God promised to go before them and with them but there would be battles ahead and work to be done.

The tribes of Rueben and Gad, however, were content to dwell outside the promised land, and not go ‘all the way’ with God. They were indifferent to what their brethren would be facing, uninterested in getting in the battle.

The world around us is plagued by this same mentality. Indifferent to the needs and desires of others, so long as they themselves are comfortable. Unwilling to go all the way, to go the extra mile. Possessing this mindset can be detrimental to our relationships, our homes, health, job and the community around us. The danger of indifference is discouragement!

Our unwillingness to rise up, to go beyond, to excel and truly fulfill God’s will for our lives can discourage others from doing it as well, until we are destroyed by mediocrity and complacency.

Remember, you are a leader. Choose to lead those who are watching not into indifference, but excellence.
