J Bar’s 10 Steps to Clean Sanitary Restrooms

Many names are used to refer to portable toilets: portajohn, can, porta-can, portapotty, porta pot, a few less-attractive words… the list goes on, and even new terms pop up here and there as people find creative new ways to describe the product.

At J Bar, the term “portapotty” is only heard when a customer or potential customer calls in for a quote before learning that we call our portable toilets “sanitary restrooms.” New employees and clients quickly learn that we use that term when referring to our products and the service performed on them weekly to ensure the cleanliness of all job sites, events, and home sites to which we deliver.

The restrooms themselves are engineered to provide better circulation than regular restrooms and give users a comfortable, sanitized area to do their business with grated floors, as well as solar-powered fans for our Elite restrooms.

The special event restrooms feature solar-powered motion sensor lights, which make your bathroom experience at a nighttime concert or campout a bit more pleasant. We also provide women’s-only units with solid floors to accommodate those wearing heels at parties and weddings and a mirror inside the unit.

Our drivers follow a 10-step procedure when servicing the restrooms on their route when it comes to service. The attention to detail associated with a restroom service may surprise you – we don’t think about how a restroom is cleaned; we really like them a little better when they are clean.

The drivers follow a 5-minute rule of thumb when servicing a restroom to ensure good productivity and efficiency among the team. They are trained to perform everything on the list to our standards and improve their own quality scores in this small amount of time, so it is pretty interesting to see the process.

Step 1 involves walking into the unit to inspect for damages, follow the damaged procedure if necessary, and remove any trash or paper that may be inside.

For steps 2 and 3, the technician will replace the scent disc if needed and pre-soak the restroom, spray the urinal and floor with cleaner, and take care of any graffiti with a graffiti remover when necessary.

On Steps 4 and 5, The tech will evacuate the tank, spray it down with water, and add the chemicals and water.

Step 6 has the tech scrubbing the urinal and any other areas that need it before power-washing the unit. Our trucks are designed to have all equipment on hand for these services, including the water and power washing hose.

At Step 7, the tech will wash all surfaces, the interior of the roof, walls, the vent tube, the urinal, tank exterior, toilet seat, the floor, the interior of the door, and the exterior of the unit, including the door and handle.

Step 8 – Next comes restocking the unit with necessary materials. The driver will make sure there are three rolls of toilet paper on the dispenser, restock the hand towels and soap dispensers of our Elite restrooms, and ensure the handwash stations are full of water and operating smoothly.

Step 9 – During the final inspection, the technician will address any buildup that was hard to remove and ensure the restroom is ready for service – taking stock of things like the shelf, coat hook, toilet seat, door lock, and making sure all rivets and screws are tight and functional.
They will verify that the restroom is still level and within 20 feet of an improved path of travel, per our company policy. If the unit has been moved by crews on-site, the technician will address that situation as well.

Lastly, Step 10 is a very important part of the service, which is spraying the interior and exterior of the restroom with the hospital-grade disinfectant we rely on to keep our sanitary restrooms safe for our customers.

These steps are taken to ensure the “immaculately clean sanitary restrooms” we advertise are the same ones we provide and continue to serve our customers.

The whole concept of sanitation and clean work environments has dramatically changed since the arrival of the coronavirus in America. People have a new outlook on what qualifies as clean and safe. The need for hand wash and hand sanitizer stations on job sites and events are on the rise and do not seem to be slowing down anytime soon. We have many readily available stations to our customers that are subject to this same level of cleanliness and service just described for the restrooms.
